Microsoft to introduce Zune Phone with Windows Mobile 7 at MWC

If there is one rumor that tends to come and go and agonizes Windows Mobile fans, it’s the one about a Zune phone. Although it’s not officially confirmed, that Microsoft will be introducing a Zune phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year. More specifically, it will be a with Zune features and capabilities, so it’s not a Zune phone, per se.

It’s been a rough year for Microsoft in mobile. Despite the launch of impressive products such as the , the company has faced some harsh criticism: “except for gaming, in the consumer market” was just one of the choicer comments from the past year. Personally, I’d disagree, and I’d actually argue that Windows Mobile 6.5 is underrated in the mobile arena — almost as much as Android is overrated. But no matter. Whether last year’s mobile platforms are good enough or not is irrelevant; no platform from 2009 is good enough for 2010 and beyond, and every mobile platform will need to evolve this year. Last week in Barcelona, we saw the first part of Microsoft’s revamped mobile strategy, and while there are many questions that will need to be answered, there’s a lot to like about what we saw.
First, it’s important to look at the velocity of the mobile space. The tech industry is largely governed by Moore’s Law, which predicts a doubling of semi-conductor density roughly every eighteen months, but the mobile space is moving at a rate of change that’s closer to every eighteen minutes. What happened yesterday simply doesn’t matter nearly as much as it once might have. Just look at two of the hottest companies in mobile, Apple and Google. Just a few years ago, neither would have been part of the conversation, much less at the center of it.

Microsoft Says Google Shouldn’t Be So Quick to Point Fingers (PC World)

PC World – Microsoft and Google are stepping up their war of words. This time it’s Microsoft’s turn: It says Google is pointing fingers rather than addressing the European Commission’s investigation into the search giant.
Confirmed: Windows Mobile 6.5 to become Windows Phone Starter Edition

might have been the big news out of Mobile World Congress this year, but it looks like Windows Mobile 6.5 will live on as the basis of Windows Phone Starter Edition. We’d already heard some whispers to that effect, but now it’s been confirmed by ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, who got some answers about the stripped-down mobile OS directly from Redmond. It’s obviously designed to be a cheaper alternative for developing and emerging markets, much like Windows 7 Starter on the desktop, and it’ll come in versions with and without Office Mobile preloaded when it ships on devices later this year. (Office 2010 will be included when it’s officially released.) Here’s the odd thing, though: when asked which features of 6.5 have been stripped to create Starter, MS replied with a list of radio support that conspicuously omits HSDPA 3G, but includes EV-DO. Simple typo, or an attempt to force international adoption of WinPho 7 in developed countries with 3G networks? We’ll do some digging and find out.
P.S.- Just to be clear here, it appears that the family will be Windows Phone 7 Series, and then potentially two WinMo 6.5 products: and Windows Phone Starter Edition. Only Starter has actually been confirmed at this time, though, and we still don’t know exactly how Microsoft is going to organize all of this and sell it. We’ll keep you updated.

Microsoft’s SideWinder X4 reviewed: a decent choice for the budget gamer

Microsoft’s anti-ghosting claims were recently put to the test by the good folks over at Tom’s Guide, and if you’ve been holding off on pulling the trigger to make sure it really lives up to the hype, you can finally cut loose and part ways with your hard-earned Greenbacks — maybe, anyway. For those unaware, Microsoft designed the to handle up to 26 key presses at once (it’s a “pro gamer” thing, we’re told), but it also allows for macro recording and profile / mode switching. According to the critics, the X4 is a step backwards in terms of design, particularly when compared to the flagship (which can be had for around $40 right now). Essentially, they could only really recommend it for those that actually do have ghosting issues when gaming, though they confess that said crowd is a relatively tiny one. But hey, don’t take our word for it — hit the source link and discover the truth for yourself.

Microsoft Hohm SDK is available to third parties, first devices to hit this summer

There are already plenty of solutions for monitoring your power consumption, particularly with Google’s relatively recent , but if you want to do things the Microsoft way, is about to get third party device friendly. An SDK has been recently released to manufacturers, and we’re supposed to expect the first compatible products by the summer. Interestingly, Microsoft has also mentioned that it “might” even get into the game of energy hardware at some point. The end game is to feed back information and control to utilities to be able to load balance energy demand (charging up that fancy electric car of yours overnight instead of at 7pm, for instance), though that sort advance might be as much as a decade out.

Sharp PB20ZU gets FCC approval — is this ‘Pure’ from Microsoft’s Project Pink?

The puzzle pieces are all fitting together now, aren’t they? Just a few days after from Sharp — a device that could very well be the pebble-shaped — we’re now seeing a separate filing for the PB20ZU. The label document isn’t terribly detailed here, but if you squint your eyes, you can definitely see how this lines up perfectly with the concept of a landscape QWERTY slider which is exactly what rumored second phone, the , is expected to be. Despite Microsoft’s blowout announcement at earlier this month, there was nary a mention of Pink or the Danger-influenced hardware and software said to surround it, so we’re expecting to see this stuff soon — especially now that we’ve got FCC certification under our belts. , perhaps? Notably, this phone rocks CDMA with Bluetooth and WiFi, so if it sees duty on an American carrier — which it almost certainly will — it’s gotta be either Verizon or Sprint. Stay tuned.

Just the other day, hearts were broken all over the world when Microsoft said that current to Windows Phone 7. The good news is that might not entirely be true as that it’s entirely up to hardware manufacturers. Way to confuse us! Another area where WinMo 6.5 gets no love? Adobe Flash 10.1.
Novatel prepping WiMAX-based MiFi, signs up for Qualcomm’s Wearable Mobile Device modules

We haven’t been shy about expressing our undying love for the , and now Novatel is playing catchup with the Sierra Wireless-built and bringing WiMAX into the fold. Novatel has completed and tested a WiMAX MiFi prototype, achieving 18Mbps throughput in testing. The unit relies on a Beceem WiMAX chip and has 30Mbps down / 10Mbps up theoretical speeds. No word on when the 4G MiFi might actually hit the market, but Novatel can’t be content for long to let Sierra eat that all by itself. Meanwhile, Novatel has also picked up Qualcomm’s Wearable Mobile Device modules for an as-yet undefined purpose. The units integrate a radio (CDMA 1x or EV-DO), Bluetooth, GPS, an accelerometer, and USB 2.0 plug. We don’t know what sort of shenanigans Novatel will get up to with such integration at its disposal, but we’re sure we’d love to find out.

PC Magazine – Microsoft objects to Google’s search-related business practices because Google locks in publishers and makes it hard for competing search engines to gain market share, not because of its popularity and competitive power, Microsoft said Friday.
