Editorial: Engadget on Google TV

Google made a big splash into the home entertainment world yesterday with the announcement of — particularly because it’s partnered up with some major names like Sony, Intel, Logitech, Best Buy and Dish Network. That’s a lot of industry momentum behind a platform that’s trying to achieve what many believe to be impossible: marry the television to the internet. Will Google finally be the one to pull it off? To be honest, the Engadget staff is nowhere near agreement on this, so we’re just going to let everyone speak for themselves — read on!

Editorial: Engadget on Microsoft Kin
If you’ve been following , you know that Microsoft’s Kin aren’t your average smartphones. They don’t have a big, bright screen, a particularly fast processor or a robust app store filled with thousands of third-party programs. They’re just a pair of with high-res cameras, running a MOTOBLUR-like OS that aggregates your social networks , while smartly in cloud storage for future reference. What does that juxtaposition mean for the cellphone market? Honestly, we can’t quite agree — so we’re going to let the roving, mobile minds at Engadget HQ speak for themselves.

During the show, just include the hashtag “#engadgetshow” and look for your tweet to show up on the ticker at the bottom of the stream. One thing to note, The Engadget Show is a family program, so any single instance of swearing or trolling will force us to turn off the ticker… and it won’t come back on. So, keep it clean and have fun!
The Engadget Show is sponsored by Sprint, and will take place at the , part of The New York Times Building in the heart of New York City at 41st St. between 7th and 8th Avenues (see map after the break). Update: As you guys may have noticed, New York and the surrounding areas got hit with a little snow. Never fear, because we’re still doing the show, but we’re going to make it easier for everyone to come out and enjoy it. If you want to see the taping today, don’t worry about showing up at 2PM or standing in line — if you come anytime before 4:30PM you will definitely get a seat! We don’t want anyone standing around in the snow, and it’s likely that not everyone who was going to come will be able to make it, so we should be able to accommodate everyone that does show up.

Ask Engadget: Best no-frills portable media player?
26/02/2010 - 04:09

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s question is coming to us from Cam, who don’t need no stinkin’ app store for his next digital audio player. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
“I’m getting quite sick of my Sansa Clip, with it deciding when and when it doesn’t want to work. I’m looking for a new PMP. The only requirement is that it has at least 4GB of storage, and supports FLAC files. Expandable memory would be cool too.”
We appreciate the brevity, Cam. In your spirit, we’ll skip the usual coaxing and just demand that those with lovable gym-certified PMPs drop some knowledge in comments below. And… go!

Engadget for iPhone / iPod touch 2.0.1 now available!
digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Engadget_for_iPhone_iPod_touch_2_0_1_now_available’;
Hey guys, some fun news to share: 2.0.1 was just approved by Apple and is now available on the App Store! The big new feature is landscape mode in article, comment, and sharing views, but we’ve also bumped up font sizes, made some improvements to the commenting experience, and added the ability to edit tweets directly in the app. Oh, and you can also now email photos from galleries from within the app, and customize the toolbar. Of course, that’s in addition to our regular features like offline viewing, built in streaming for The Engadget Show, and in-app tip submissions — you know, for when you see the iPhone 3GT leak out.
So what are you waiting for? You can download the app , or just click the image above — if you’ve already got it installed the update should be waiting for you right this second. Full changelog after the break.
Once again, a big thanks to the team at AOL that makes these apps happen: Sun Sachs, Andy Averbuch, Hareesh P, Anibal Rosado, Rajesh Kumar, Rich Foster, Claudeland Louis, Mike Wolstat, Eric Wedge, Vikas B R, Milissa Tarquini, Asha Indira and Bob Gurwin. High fives all around.
P.S.- Updates for the BlackBerry and webOS apps should hit in March, and that’s also when we’re scheduled to launch our Android app — stay tuned!

Kondo KHR-3HV robot celebrates Engadget Award with a new Linux backpack (video)

Yes, , you were our choice for , and we see you’re celebrating by going out and getting yourself some new gear. We like your taste. Inside that fancy new backpack is a 32-bit Samsung ARM CPU running at 200MHz, powerful enough to handle Linux and things like onboard image processing and object recognition. It also supports WiFi, meaning Kondo can beam what he sees wirelessly and become a roving security guard — a very small and non-lethal security guard, but a guard nontheless. This kind of tech (shown off in a video below) will set you back ¥60,000, or about $660, and yes that’s just for the backpack. (The bot itself goes for somewhere north of the $1,300 range.) So congratulations again on your victory, 3HV — just don’t let it go to your webcam.
